Mini Film Fest

May 31, 2016 by ds83473@gmail.com

We turned our Memorial Day weekend into a mini film fest, and saw three movies.

  1. Friday – The Lobster We really wanted to see this at TIFF, but it was one of the movies that only was shown twice, so too hard to get tickets. I liked it, but it was a real film fest kind of movie. It stayed grim, and never caught a smile from its black humor, although in a way that made it a lot like the last thing I saw Colin Farrell in – the second season of True Detective.
  2. Saturday – Love and Friendship This was at the WI Film Fest, but never at a time when we could go. It’s made from a lesser work by Jane Austen – which makes me and Anthony Lane think that what happened to Phillip K. Dick is going to happen with Austen – anything she wrote, no matter how slight will be made into a movie. We saw it out at the new AMC, that used to be Star Cinema in Fitchburg – it smelled way better than before the facelift/remodel and had the lounge chairs.
  3. Sunday – A Bigger Splash Probably my favorite of the bunch – like Love and Friendship it’s a romantic intrigue, but set in this century, instead of the 19th. Set on an unbelievably beautiful and rugged Sicilian island, Pantelleria. One review I read called it the “perils of being rich and white” but it was totally the rock star life. I was reminded of this picture of Mick Jagger, Dennis Hopper, and Julian Schnabel, at Cap d’Antibes. In almost every scene in the movie there someone naked, or in a bathrobe, or wet. I would’ve drowned him, too.

Probably Love and Friendship was the most purely fun.

And in case you were wondering, the universe was right – there was plenty of food yesterday, even without potatoes.

The most popular foods were the bean dip – only a dab left from out of the 13 x 9 pan:

And the pies – just these two slivers left. We ate them with ice cream and pie crust cookies and berries, after Bigger Splash. I took the lemon.

And look how much pulled meat I got from that chicken – this is a 6 qt. bowl:

All this meat soaked up the sauce nicely. I had my sandwich on a pretzel bun with coleslaw. Everyone who ate it was complimentary, but I think most guests ate the meat that they brung – tuna or brats. So, I froze two containers of the chicken meat, am taking one to Al on Tuesday, and expect the other to be handy to take to somebody else’s potluck or picnic later in the summer – or a quick meal when kids come home.
