Deb's Lunch ... and Dinner and Breakfast too

First week of school

September 11, 2018 by ds83473@gmail.com

It seemed like a long hard week even though it was only 4 days.

Tuesday I started off serving the pantry breakfast. It was the first UN-rainy day in forever, and as I already observed it felt great to bike to the east side. Came back and took Anna shopping for food to pack in her lunch. She likes the pre-packaged stuff, like store cookies instead of home made. And she’s really a name brand shopper – it was kind of amusing to see her perplextion? “how perplexed she looked” I guess that should be, when she was looking for Lays at the co-op.

All of which got me into work as promised from 1:00-6:00.

Wednesday was my first night class, 5:30-8:00, so I planned to NOT arrive at work too much before noon. I sent Anna off to her first day of school, and managed to get out for a walk before the deluge. I got my free drink paid for with my Starbucks stars and sat for a little while answering work emails on my phone, but by the time I had gone back home and showered and dressed and really needed to leave it was pouring. I had a couple of bags of books and other stuff to unload, and on my first try it was so wet I gt soaked just getting out of the car. I went back home and ate a muffin, then tried again, and amazingly, I got a spot. Cost me a buck to unload under cover, so not too shabby. And I guess the first class went OK.

And Anna survived her first day of school.

Thursday I had a fairly free morning, followed by an afternoon phone call and a meeting. I can’t remember if I biked in or walked – I think I biked, and I know I biked to pick up my CSA box. I had to fortify myself with a bacon butty (shown as featured image) before I biked off to get the box, because the bagel that had been in my desk drawer at work was moldy (probably also a result of the wet weather) when I went to toast it that morning, so I got home hungry.  The CSA box was a bit lighter than we expect for this time of year. The rain has been crazy hard on our farmers. Beth said, “It’s too wet …. We’re pretty philosophical by this point in our farming careers but it hurts to watch lovely crops melt down in the rain.”

I used the single perfect zucchini I got in the box, and a little Orano sweet pepper, and onions and tomato to make this rice, that Smitten Kitchen calls Italian Fried rice. We ate it with fake Caesar dressing (mayonnaise with lemon juice, garlic, Worcestershire, and a splash of olive oil) on some Romaine hearts I bought at the grocery store.

On Friday, I went to this New Midwest Photo Show, organized by Andy Adams/Flak Photo. I think I liked Dave Jordano’s photos of Detroit the best in the show.
