Deb's Lunch ... and Dinner and Breakfast too

Snowy Sunday

February 17, 2019 by ds83473@gmail.com

We shoveled about 4 inches of snow twice already today, and it looks like there’s maybe another 2-3 in the driveway since our last shovel, which was about 3:30 – it almost 8:00 PM now.

Since Valentine’s Day was Thursday, seems like a lot of people extended the holiday into the weekend, and so did I, with a post-valentine’s-dessert-potluck on Sunday afternoon.

I made these little chocolate cakes from Milk Street Kitchen. They have almond flour and browned butter and cocoa and a bit of cinnamon and chipotle chile, and leavened with whipped egg whites, so I made custard sauce with the yolks. It got a little curdle-y because I made it with brown sugar, but it was still good. The cakes are crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside, and surprisingly chocolatey for only 1/3 cup cocoa. That’s on the first day – not sure how they’ll hold up, but I’ll be sure to eat at least one tomorrow, to see.

And I made ricotta cheesecake. It was a little dry but still good.

Jane & Jonathan brought a peach pie with ice cream. Molly & David brought two of their kids and some Brie with marinated fruit to go on top.  I also had a baguette and some marinated feta – before I left for Seattle, I had some opened feta that I didn’t want to go bad so I cut it up and stuck it in a jar with lemon rind, rosemary springs, a chile, and covered the whole mess with olive oil. Put it out with olives, and some Ski Queen Gjetost. And leftover fancy valentines chocolates, chocolate dipped apricots and dried cherry clusters, and marzipan dates. And hot cidar with brandy.

Saturday I bought my Bernina.

Bought a new sewing machine today! And getting the old fixed so I’ll have two.
