Rainy Memorial Day

May 27, 2019 by ds83473@gmail.com

We chose to have our grillout on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend and good thing too, because today, Monday, the actual Day, is pretty rainy & grey, while yesterday was gorgeous, sunny and not too hot. My theme for the weekend menu was defrosting the freezer – accomplished on Saturday – using up last … [Read more…]

May might be almost as bad as April this year

May 23, 2019 by ds83473@gmail.com

Or maybe I’m just having a bad week. Monday I put the first scratches on my car. I was pulling into a parking spot at my campus ramp, like I’ve done a million times, and there was this terrible scratching noise, and voilà. The true horror of it is look how many different pieces of … [Read more…]

Mother’s Day just late

May 20, 2019 by ds83473@gmail.com
asparagus tart

Today I made the brunch that I probably would have made last Sunday for Mother’s Day, if I hadn’t been at the iSchool graduation instead. Asparagus tart – with ramps and a shallot that had been in the bottom of the veggie drawer for months, and a little bit of goat cheese. Rhubarb muffins. Bacon. … [Read more…]

Graduations, Memorials, Retirements

May 16, 2019 by ds83473@gmail.com

Somehow I thought May would be less busy, since the UW semester ended May 3. I gave my students until May 10 to submit final projects, which means I just finished grading today (May 16). And the University must’ve tightened some regulation or something, because I (and lots of other faculty & instructors) got all … [Read more…]

And, I’m back

white violets

Time for Wisconsin, and Illinois,  fun. I collected my bag and drove home from the Milwaukee airport and was home by 2:00. Plenty of time for unpacking and a dinner of leftovers (Beef enchiladas, Metcalfe’s deli coleslaw, Zatarain’s Spanish rice mix with added chicken) followed by Game of Thrones, the Starbucks cup episode. I remain … [Read more…]

Heading back to WI

May 7, 2019 by ds83473@gmail.com

And remembering what I did in New York. I’m sitting at LaGuardia wondering why my flight hasn’t started boarding – but they’re only 5 minutes late so far. Ah – looks like passengers are disembarking thru our gate so that must be why. I kind of told you about Thursday. The best flight I could … [Read more…]

New York City, imagine that

May 4, 2019 by ds83473@gmail.com

Here are the pics, more words soon. View from the cab window in Harlem, tulips on the UWS, blooming trees & flowers in Central Park, daguerretypes & guitars & the mando Peter Buck used for “Losing My Religion” at the Met, wandering the High Line, and the Vessel with John, New Museum, and Devan Shimoyama … [Read more…]

April to May Food

May 4, 2019 by ds83473@gmail.com

Trying hard to remember the last couple of week’s food. There was Passover, and then charoset muffins, which I enjoyed but neither Anna nor Mark would eat. Last Friday we had beef enchiladas for dinner. I made a big batch of enchilada sauce using strained veggie broth that had been the base of our matzoh … [Read more…]

May Day!

May 1, 2019 by ds83473@gmail.com

May Day is different things to different people, right? I wanted a wobbley cat – but most of them say general strike instead of May Day. Here in Madison and around the country it was Day Without Latinx and Immigrants’ – thousands of people marching to the Capitol. At least it’s not April any more!
