Pandemic dining and cities on fire

August 27, 2020 by ds83473@gmail.com

OK how the F does our so-called president get to say that cities will burn if we elect Biden when it’s happening now, on his watch?!!

Not to mention using the White House for a partisan campaign event … ?

What was that about dining? Well, my freezer was starting to get too full, so I invited three other couples over for brunch on Sunday, and we sat in the driveway and ate assorted bakery and breakfast burritos and melon.

Before that, Saturday afternoon sort of out of the blue Heike texted and asked if we wanted to come over to her & Steve’s for happy hour. I made the tomato galette that I’d been going to make for Sunday, and we went, and sat in their backyard that’s up against a nature preserve, on the deck, under twinkly lights, and ate the galette and crackers and smoked oysters and a really nice salad that Heike made with fresh tomatoes, and drank negronis – mine with gin, Steve’s with bourbon, and G&Ts.

It was pretty heavenly.

What’re we going to do when it’s too cold to go outside, though!?

Here are some pictures.

Banana blueberry muffins
Banana cake

Monday breakfast, in pieces
Assembled

Chilaquiles we ate Monday night
Dinner Thursday. Slow cooked Romano beans from the the Saturday market, turkey meatballs, buttery rice pilaf

And we gotta eat, but damn, what a week.

Monday night in Madison WI, photo by Miki Pope

What Miki says about this picture, “Last night (Aug 24) in Madison, these counter-protesters showed up with guns. Myself and two others were watching them from across the street. The guy in front took a few steps towards us, placed his hand on the barrel of his gun, and started raising it up to point at us. Before it was completely raised, he decided to put it back down, but kept his hand on the barrel.”

Two shot dead and one injured in Kenosha during protests

Comfort songs Robyn Hitchcock, Be Still, Leon Bridges, River, and of course

I also like this song, Dogwood Blossom, by Fionn Regan. I heard both it and Leon Bridges on TV – Fionn in Normal People, Bridges in Lovecraft Country, and Leon was also in the one-season cable show Roadies, that was on in the summer of 2016, that I guess nobody watched but us, because it got cancelled so quick. We liked it though, and there was a lot of good music in it.
