Deb's Lunch ... and Dinner and Breakfast too

Labor Day Weekend, 2020

September 8, 2020 by ds83473@gmail.com

Some of the stuff I did do:

Processed A LOT of tomatoes (I bought a 25-lb. box from my CSA that I brought home Thursday night); now in the freezer there is:

A carton of chunky tomato sauce with white wine & rosemary; another of Marcella’s famous tomato-butter sauce; 2 cartons of roasted tomato sauce;  2 cartons of whole peeled tomatoes; and 4 cartons of diced tomatoes. These are all yogurt containers that hold about 3 cups, so each carton is about like a 28-oz. can. There’re also 3 smaller cartons, pints, of roasted tomatoes.

And on Monday, Susan and Carl brought me more tomatoes, about 10 pounds of lovely San Marzanos, paste tomatoes, two heirlooms, and a quart jar of sauce that they say is concentrated from 5 pounds. On Tuesday I made cooked salsa with some of them.

On Monday I made 3 jars of corn salsa, that yes, has tomatoes in it.

This is the jar I will give Susan if it ever stops raining and I can bike it over

Hiked around at Governor Dodge Park, and came home and ate Jamie Oliver’s cheat’s deep dish pizza – the cheat is it’s a biscuit crust. I used about half the amount of crust.

Sorted cooking mags, but not as well as I could’ve and I still never found the October 2019 Cuisine at Home where the corn salsa recipe is (I got it online instead).

Went for a long bike ride, around Lake Monona, on Saturday. 16 miles

Ate brats and coleslaw and corn – though I broiled the brats and boiled the corn inside, what’s the use of starting a fire in the grill for 2 brats and 2 ears of corn?! I had my brat with my homemade pickle relish and horseradish. It was pretty perfect. They were Willow Creek brats from the co-op.

Had a nice brunch on the back deck, with Susan and Carl and Susan’s daughter Leah. Used up leftovers from other meals. And tomatoes

The set up: rolled silverware, plastic plates, hand sanitizer
Tomato pie
Yellow watermelon

Cantaloupe chunks
Coleslaw
Kale salad

Crumbcake & bran muffins
The whole spread where people could help themselves and then go sit outsde to eat

Stuff I didn’t do, or only did half-assed:

Make more masks, and send them to John & Megan

Had two beers Saturday, and felt sorta cruddy all day Sunday, and ate about half a box of Annie’s bunny grahams in the afternoon so didn’t have much appetite for our (kinda spendy but worth it) carryout Turkish dinner Sunday.

See sorted cooking mags, above

Tried to organize a zoom meetup, with all the kids and my brother – only us geezers showed, no kids. My mistake: started a huge multi-person text thread before the time of the meet was settled. Shoulda first picked a time for the zoom with the set of kids who has the baby, and then let everyone else know.
