Deb's Lunch ... and Dinner and Breakfast too

Opposing view points

September 26, 2020 by ds83473@gmail.com

So I listened to a bit of NPR’s special coverage of Trump announcing Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination to the supreme court, and then I google’d how bad could amy coney barret really be, and found these things.

The first one is my hope, that someone who is a judge, and invested in the law, will behave ever so much better than Trump;

I’ve known Amy Coney Barrett for 15 years. Liberals have nothing to fear

The second is my fear, that liberals and Democrats will stoop to Trump’s level trying to discredit Barret, and we’ll end up making Trump look better.

Will Democrats Fail the Amy Coney Barrett Test?

Then I listened to Noah Feldman, a law professor who’s quoted in the “nothing to fear” opinion piece, arguing Barrett should be considered because she is eminently qualified to serve on the court, and deserves to be on the court, and that the way to lower the temperature and restore civility is to install judges with opposing viewpoints. He says he disagrees with her on almost every level, but acknowledges her brilliance.

This was followed by another commentator who pointed out that it’s not the qualifications of any potential justice that matter right now – Merrick Garland was eminently qualified to serve on the court, and had a right to be considered, too – it’s the process that’s fucked. It’s not just that we’re 40 days from the election or whatever it is now – we’re IN the election since so many states have early voting. And all the Republicans who back in those lat 8 months of the Obama administration, said let the people choose the president and then let the president choose the justice are hypocrites. I like that argument the best.

Speaking of early voting, I went and helped people register and served as a human dropbox for absentee ballots in a city park today. And that’s another thing that no one can decide if it’s a good thing or not. The Republican legislature threatened the event, and that had a chilling effect on some voters, Mark included, making them afraid their ballot would be invalidated if dropped off at the park. My facebook is full of snark.

It’s all more seesawing around. I’m going to go bake an apple cider cake. This one looks good to me.

And here’s breakfast.

Half loaf of whole wheat sourdough. I bought some fancy wholewheat flour from this place, Barton Springs Mill. The reviews said it would be dense, but sweeter than some wholewheats and I think I agree.
