Deb's Lunch ... and Dinner and Breakfast too

Stuff I learned this week

October 14, 2020 by ds83473@gmail.com

That I’ve been thinking about on walks. And I guess this is mostly pop culture. I’m so shallow.

Jack White is very tall. We watched him on SNL and the tallness was obvious. He may be the reincarnation of Jimmy Page (I know, I know, Page’s technically still alive), channeling Robert Johnson, and a hundred years of Black blues players with blind in their names. And Muddy Waters. Not sure why Jack wore white makeup for the 2nd song.

My own little brother is pretty awesome, but I want Jeff Tweedy as my other little brother, separated at birth. Jeff is less angular than my brother, and looks like he could be part of my family, short, round face, big glasses. Tweedy’s about 10 years younger than me, so maybe we could adopt him.

Last night, I bought a ticket to see Tweedy and Nora Jones talk about writing songs on the zoom, because it included a copy of Jeff’s newest book. I wrapped the leftover squash casserole in pie dough to make it a galette, and we ate it on the couch with salad while watching Jeff & Nora. It was sort of like what we used to serve at Pie Palooza – a plate with a pie of lightly dressed greens and a wedge of pie.

Then I had online class, and it went OK, I think I had good activities prepared for the students, but 8:00-9:00 is really late for me to be thinking.

The old dog that Rach and I liked to visit in his yard and see on our walks with his owner, died. I thought I saw his owner without him talking to the crossing guard a few mornings ago, and wondered, and today I saw the owner in his yard and asked after the dog. The dog was a floppy eared slobber dog – very cute.

We’ve been watching Great British Baking show a lot, and I got curious about Pru Leith. Turns out she’s 80 – what a looker, as we might’ve said in less correct times. Speaking of correct, when I saw she’s originally from South Africa, I started to wonder about her politics, and she is Conservative, but in the David Cameron sense, socially liberal. Although British politics is soooo confusing … anyways, I think I can still like her.

I went to register students to vote, and there were a lot of them, and they seem to really want to vote. That seems encouraging.

This morning I got email from Jimmy Carter that told me to be optimistic, and give money to about a dozen senate races where a Democrat might win. Maybe I will.

The oldest living former President, Jimmy Carter, wants us to remain hopeful.

I actually do feel a bit more optimistic today. I made soup and we ate it for dinner with leftover pizza.

I thought this sculpture that I’d seen in the yard of a house not far from my brother’s house in Seattle was unique, but there’s another one in the yard of a house not far from my house in Madison WI. Maybe it’s WalMart sculpture. Maybe the artist who designed it lives in the Seattle house, and it got franchised so the Madison people could buy it.

There’s a bunch of food stuff, too – but later on that. I made pizza for dinner Saturday. Red sauce, cherry tomatoes and roasted poblanos on one, potatoes, sausage, and parsley pesto on the other.

And PS just found this belated birthday wish to John Lennon – To celebrate what would have been John Lennon’s 80th birthday, Jeff performs “God” with Spencer Tweedy and Liam Kazar.

I wondered if Jeff would sing “Susi & me” where John sings “Yoko & me” – he made it Wilco – give a listen.
