Deb's Lunch ... and Dinner and Breakfast too

Almost February

January 31, 2021 by ds83473@gmail.com

So here we are again, another Sunday.

Another week of plugged into online meetings all day – and sometimes in the evening too – and not doing much of anything creative, except maybe cooking dinner. And not taking very many pics of food or anything. Like today, I planned to make some more masks with the fabric I got printed with Jen’s designs. I figured I’d make 3-layer masks – adding a layer of interfacing in between the two layers of cotton I’ve been using, for extra protection for me and the family members I’m making them for. But I spent too much time on work and never got to it. I wore the orange one today to pick up carry out coffee at Colectivo, and it worked well. It’s an iron on transfer so seems extra protective. I wore the white one, double-mask with one of the blue paper disposables to go to Target on Thursday, and that was pretty steamy on my glasses.

Here’s Sunday brunches:

Sunday, Jan. 24 I made sourdough crepes before we went for our long walk. Like I said on insta, the recipe calls for baking soda, which I left out having never encountered it in a crepe batter before – but in hindsight I think that would’ve made them a bit more bubbly and tender so I’ll try it next time.

I filled the crepes with ricotta and rolled them up into blintzes

Filled & fried

This week we had eggs and potatoes and toast and sausages and rhubarb crumb cake.

I forgot to take any pictures of brunch, so all I got was my empty plate

The last two potatoes from my Tipi storage share fried for breakfast. Good thing I signed up for 2021 CSA on Saturday! All that’s left now is a few sweet potatoes, a celeriac, one bulb of garlic, and a few shallots

Crumb cake – I used Smitten Kitchen Big Crumb Cake with sourdough discard subbing for the sour cream

With a little bit of rhubarb puree filling and about 1/2 almond flour in the crumb topping

Last Sunday night it snowed, and we had to shovel on Monday morning

Monday breakfast after shoveling

Monday was the first day of classes, and somehow that made me feel a bit like the pressure was off. I guess I do feel a bit of creative pride at getting the two classes up and running. I think they’re pretty well organized, and I sent out the syllabi, drafts about a week out, final ready in the course on Day one.

Two classes, ready Jan 25

I walked downtown at 3:30 and got my first dose of vaccine, and got my new glasses tightened. The vaccine clinic was in a campus building and it was a bit chaotic. And crowded. And yes I know I’m lucky and privileged. I got my shot by virtue of being 65 and employed at UW, even though I’m mostly working at home, and K-12 teachers and grocery workers aren’t getting it yet. Or Mark who’s older than me but emeritus. So far so good – I feel OK – and dose 2 scheduled on the 16th. It’s all kind of a mess. There was a woman there without an appointment who kept saying, “I’m 63 and I start teaching in person tomorrow. I called and they told me sometimes you can get leftover vaccine if you come after 3:30.” “Do you have an appointment?” “No.” “OK, wait over there, maybe we can help you.”

Wednesday we had a cold bright sunny day, after the snow on Monday. Real Wisconsin winter weather.
