Deb's Lunch ... and Dinner and Breakfast too

Filled muffins

And family togetherness.

On Saturday morning we tried out the big Farmers Market again, followed by a stop at Madison Farmers Unite to pick up a pre-order. It’s a nice bike ride, until you get the vicinity of the county facility where the market is held. The bike paths peter out, and even though this time we finally figured out the best way to go to get there by bike – we were both partially right – you still have to cut across a lot of traffic. And once you’re at the market, the parking and rows of vendors are all in the same parking lot, so it’s an uneasy mix of people, cars, and booths.

We got pretty flowers and tomatoes and lettuce and spinach. Then we picked up meat and eggs and cheese that I’d pre-ordered.

When we got home, I did a little yoga and stretching, then I made filled muffins, rhubarb & blueberry. I had little pots of rhubarb puree and blueberry compote in the fridge, and it didn’t seem like I’d be able to finish it all with yogurt or cottage cheese or toast, so muffins seemed like the best move. The coffee cake I made with the rhubarb last week was a little gooey on the inside, so I also wanted to get over the jinx.

I did a little email catch-up and grading, and a little later, John & Megan came to visit, the first time I got to see them in over a year.

Visiting cars

I made enchiladas for dinner and we ate late when they got here, at about 8:00 on Saturday night. After dinner we watched a Schitt’s Creek and an SNL repeat, the one with Regé-Jean Page and Bad Bunny from back in February, then went to bed. In the morning Mark & I let the kids sleep, and went for a walk, then we had sourdough waffles and bacon for breakfast.

John & Megan & I went for a walk, downtown, up State Street and around the Capitol, home via Langdon Street (fraternity row) and the Lakeshore path. 22K steps for me. A vacation-like walking amount – and I haven’t really done any work today. Yay!

This weekend’s photos

It wasn’t the greatest week for cooking and eating for me; overeating due to boredom and tiredness figured in. On Thursday I planned to skip dinner because I had online class, and then have dessert with Mark after class, but class ran really short, and Mark hadn’t even eaten his sandwich yet, so I had a bunch of crackers and cheese while I waited until it was time to finish the rhubarb strawberry crumble.

I also tried to make halvah, and it came out too dry and crumbly. I think I over-boiled the syrup. I want to make Molly Yeh’s halvah filled challah and this batch will be fine for that, but still disappointing. And I got two-for-the-price-of-one bags Hershey chocolate Easter eggs, and overindulged on those, too.
