New Year’s Day Observed

January 2, 2023 by ds83473@gmail.com

Another day to hibernate – or so I hoped. I went to bed at 10:30 and kind of read and dozed until 11:00, then gave up and took my glasses off. I slept until 1:30, woke up parched and thirsty. I’m still kind of stuffy from my cold, and getting really dried out in the night from mouth breathing, plus I think I would prefer if Mark let the heat drop a little more at night. Downstairs it drops to 64° overnight but he keeps it warmer upstairs. Don’t tell him I said that, though <grin>. After, I slept all the way until almost 5:00, pretty good for me, but then somehow the “oh-no-it’s-Monday” anxiety crept in and I couldn’t really fall back asleep, and got up at 6:53. I knew I should have tried to stay up later on New Year’s Day night, but there was nothing on TV since it was Sunday.

Oh well.

Sometime when I was in my 20s, I heard this superstition that as your New Year’s Day goes, so goes the rest of your year. I kinda hope that doesn’t apply this year. I wanted to start the day with a longer walk, but it was kind of icy when we first went out, so we went straight to Colectivo, no detours for distance, and my mileage for the day was only 2.6 miles. Better than Saturday – 2.1 – and not as good as today, 3.1, and nowhere near as good as Friday, almost 6 miles. I drove over to Steve and Heike’s house, and spent time hanging out with friends, by their firepit on the deck in the backyard. I’d be happy to do plenty more of that this year. I probably ate a little too much, so again, not a trend I want to continue in 2023.

Our NYE was quiet, apps and Matilda the Musical and episode 1 Fleischman is in Trouble.

Here’s some extra NYE wishes from my daughters-in-law and the artist Sho Shibuya.

On New Year’s Day observed, Al & Emma and Jasper came over for brunch – postponed from Christmas Day. Jasper was a little cranky – he didn’t sleep well last night; guess it was all that party party party on New Year’s day. I did finally get to lay my un-masked cheek on his head and breathe his sweet baby smell. And he completely conked out on my chest which was soothing for both our sleep-deprived selves, and I hope the start of more Oma & grandson bonding in 2023.

I made breakfast burritos, giving me a chance to cut down my recipe for 40 to 6 and that’s good, since I’m going to be doing it for a cooking class in February. I mean I have it written down longhand, but not on the blog yet. I tried out Smitten Kitchen’s Twisty Cinnamon Buns, and I really like the dough; the shape – although it is very pretty – a little less. I think I’m going to try making the dough in a different shape – maybe coiled in muffin tins.

After I took a walk during which my knee hurt more than I liked. It was cloudy and muddy and these purple berries were a little flash of color.

When I got home I packed up leftover cookies into wax paper assorted bags to give away at the food pantry tomorrow. It was already too dark to take a picture.

OK, I guess that’s it for now. Now to try to stay up until at least 11:00/11:30 tonight. I did make it to midnight on NYE, so it’s not like I can’t do it. Just have to put my mind to it.
