Deb's Lunch ... and Dinner and Breakfast too

Pumpkin and kittens

October 9, 2023 by ds83473@gmail.com

This was going to be “Pumpkin, pumpkin, and kittens”, because I actually made two things with pumpkin Saturday, but only one was photographed:

Pumpkin date scones, been making them for years – here’s the recipe, posted in the 1990s and it shows.

The pumpkin item that was not photographed was Yossi Arefi’s olive oil pumpkin cake, that I was trying for the first time, to take to Steve & Heike’s 40th anniversary party.  After they invited us, I first thought that Mark & I would never make it to 40 years together because we got together later in life. But I was 40 and he was 44, and it’s entirely possible that I will live to be 80 – I’m actually aiming for 92 so I can see my older son turn 60 – and even more possible that Mark will live to 84 because both his parents lived longer than mine.

Photo by Yossi Arefi. Pumpkin Olive Oil Cake with Maple Olive Oil Glaze from Snacking Cakes — Apt. 2B Baking Co. Mine looked exactly alike, except I sprinkled some of my homemade granola on top – I picked out the whole almonds – instead of the pepitas.

It was a really nice party – live music and food in the backyard.

I guess there was another pumpkin thing over the weekend – Sunday Pia and I went to my CSA’s gleaning day and we got a pumpkin. Pia picked it out and it’s quite nice.

We also got a bunch of flowers.

And probably too much squash.

And lots of greens and some big red peppers, no pics of those. After the gleaning, we went and picked up the kittens.

And before the gleaning, Susan and I went for a walk, and saw some very pretty dahlias at a neighbors.

And before the weekend, what about the rest of the week? It’s been interesting.

Rach is here for the first time since pandemic. It was crazy hot; highs in the mid-80s at the the beginning of the week, and then it cooled off a bit Wednesday although it was in the high 70s by the end of the day. Finally Thursday and Friday we got the big cool down and by Saturday morning when I biked to the Farmers market to sell the cookbook, it was something like 41°. The ride there wasn’t so bad, but coming home was a little challenging because my fingers and toes were numb after being at the booth for 3 hours.

Me & Jasper played on the swings Monday but only briefly because it was so hot.

Here’s what it looked like Sunday when Emma took him on a real Fall day.

In between, there was a lot of cooking. Cauliflower Coronation Salad, Stuffed sweet potatoes, pot roast and roasted vegetables. We went over to Al & Emma’s for dinner on Friday so Rach could meet Jasper, and we took a Hetty McKinnon greens and tortillas casserole, with a cumin tomato sauce from her new Tenderheart book. This recipe is kind of similar, but the sauce is easier, and no corn. Pumpkin scones and loaf, as above. I also made another batch of tomato tarts.

Looks like I never did post the first batch from August here, only on insta

And I think that’s it for for now, I’m closed up in the sunroom with the kittens and they’re just a little too wild. More kitty pics will be along shortly.
