Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend I went into a baking frenzy.
I made cranberry almond scones, that weren’t quite sweet enough. Either I didn’t put in enough sugar or I forgot it entirely. The scones have a nice texture though.

scone I sampled, a little blurry
I baked the croissant sourdough that I’d had rising. It’s regular sourdough but when you’re doing the folds you fold in a stick of grated butter in a couple of installments. At first I thought it didn’t rise enough, but it has nice holes/air bubbles. The only downside of it is that when you toast it butter escapes and toaster smells like smoky grilling out.
I had part of a box of filo dough and I made apple strudel. It was probably the least successful of my baking adventures. Too much filo to apples and it got kind of soggy and grey as it cooled off, probably because I used the last of the nukhorn filling from the freezer, which is a mixture of brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and finely chopped walnuts. It’s the walnuts I suspect of turning it grey.
On Friday to start off the weekend we went for a walk and saw baby goosers.
And drank coffee outside.
And Steve and Heike came over for dinner, and I made Hailee Catalano’s spicy carrot rigatoni. These are actually rigatoni mezzi, halves or minis, that I hadn’t had before, but they’re very cute. I have Hailee’s cookbook, and while the web version calls for 1-2 chopped Catalan peppers, the book has he easier approach of buying them in a jar. And no capers in the topping in the book version. And speaking of the topping, my carrots didn;t have any tops so I used double parsley instead. And also didn’t quenelle the ricotta, just dolloped it on top.
And here’s the Jasper pic to close, he’s eating raisons & chocolate chips for an after nap snack. Watching Cars shorts, cartoon spinoffs from the Cars movie that are good because they’re only 10-15 minutes long in contrast to the 2-hour+ movie.
