TIFF, Day 6 & 7

September 16, 2017 by ds83473@gmail.com

On Wednesday, we started our day with bacon sandwiches at St Lawrence Market. That was a heap of bacon. After the bacon, we proceeded on to Darkest Hour, yet another cinematic depiction of WWII, before the US got involved, like Dunkirk, and yet another version of Winston Churchill. We last saw him played by John … [Read more…]

TIFF 2017, Days 4 & 5

September 14, 2017 by ds83473@gmail.com

On our day 4, Monday, our first movie was Happy End directed by Michael Haneke, the Austrian director. It’s kind of a sequel to sequel to 2012’s Amour, that I think we tried to see at our very first TIFF. It was really well done but hard to feel sympathetic for all those rich people. … [Read more…]

TIFF 2017, Days 1, 2, and 3

September 13, 2017 by ds83473@gmail.com

Days 1, 2, & 3 for us anyways – the Festival really started Thursday, so our day 1 was actually day 2 officially.  It didn’t start getting confusing until Monday, when all the introducers started saying, “welcome to day 5” when it was only day 4 for us. But that’s the next post. <grin> Day … [Read more…]

A long no-blogging stretch

I haven’t written since we got back from D.C. two weeks ago. I could say it’s because I’ve been working on getting my fall semester online courses ready, and it’s so much the same, writing content and posting it online in a content management system, that I don’t have energy left for blogging. Maybe. I … [Read more…]

Eclipse tourists in D.C.

August 24, 2017 by ds83473@gmail.com

From Sunday to Wednesday last week we were tourists in our nation’s Capital. We got in on Sunday morning, dropped our bags at the hotel – a Kimpton that I got at an astonishingly good price – and went off seeking breakfast. I took a picture of a building tear-down and got another one on … [Read more…]

Cooking is back

August 18, 2017 by ds83473@gmail.com

Last Thursday, the last day of the new online students’ on-campus orientation, I got a big, summer-y CSA box. That’s a few green beans, “silver” and green cucumbers, something like 2 1/3 pounds of tomatoes, bunches of basil and leaf lettuce, an onion two little melons, and 10 ears of corn. After I brought all … [Read more…]

“Who knows where the time goes”

August 7, 2017 by ds83473@gmail.com

Since the last time I wrote, a little over a week ago, I’ve been to another wedding of another kid – my first foster daughter – and survived the first day of our new students’ Bootcamp. I dried some of Al & Emma’s flowers. They remind me of these somehow. This bouquet that somebody tossed … [Read more…]

Ain’t nobody here but us chickens

July 30, 2017 by ds83473@gmail.com

This time last Sunday I was out for a walk with Rachael, about to come home and start brunch prep. The house was full of people, family here for the wedding. On Tuesday we got another house guest, a medical student here from Malawi for UW’s Global Health Institute that my neighbor who’s a pediatrician … [Read more…]

My kid got married

July 28, 2017 by ds83473@gmail.com

Last Saturday, and I haven’t even blogged about it yet. Here are a few pictures, and I’ll try to do it justice in the next post. The overleaf, word press featured image, is Emma’s bouquet, which is my iPhone wallpaper right now.
