Temperature swings & pools of slush

February 24, 2019 by ds83473@gmail.com

I seem to have devolved into a once a week blogger, so I guess I might as well report on my week. Backwards – weekend to weekend. We were going to go to Chicago this weekend but got scared off by the weather predictions of ice storm and crazy wind. It turned out to not … [Read more…]

Snowy Sunday

February 17, 2019 by ds83473@gmail.com

We shoveled about 4 inches of snow twice already today, and it looks like there’s maybe another 2-3 in the driveway since our last shovel, which was about 3:30 – it almost 8:00 PM now. Since Valentine’s Day was Thursday, seems like a lot of people extended the holiday into the weekend, and so did … [Read more…]

Six snow days

February 12, 2019 by ds83473@gmail.com

The Madison Schools have had six snow (or extreme cold weather) closure days this winter. Unheard of. That’s like 3 years worth of snow days – they only build about 1 or 2 extra days into the calendar each year for weather closures. Our global-climate-change winter has been crazy disruptive this year. And February’s not … [Read more…]

Back in Wisconsin in the Deep Freeze

January 31, 2019 by ds83473@gmail.com

At first, but now – when I started writing this, Saturday, Groundhogs Day – all of a sudden we’re thawing. I got back last Sunday around 4:00 in the afternoon. The kids had already had a snow day on the Wednesday prior, and more snow was on the way. The airlines sent me a bunch … [Read more…]

Saying goodbye to Seattle

January 26, 2019 by ds83473@gmail.com

On Friday, before I headed down to the Convention Center for the librarians conference, I touched up my black boots with a little heel & edge polish I found in my brother & sister-in-law’s closet. Somehow it made me think of the words to this old Stephen Stills’ song, Johnny’s Garden: And I’ll do anything … [Read more…]

Best stuff I’ve had to eat in Seattle

January 23, 2019 by ds83473@gmail.com

Kind of a lot of it is my own cooking, but I guess that’s as it should be, since I’m actually living here, not vacationing, touristing, or conferencing – yet. Friday the librarians’ conference begins**, so I should have some additional eating adventures then.   Stove top mac & cheese, that I made for one … [Read more…]

MLK Day in Seattle

January 22, 2019 by ds83473@gmail.com

I didn’t march, although there was a march starting at my niece’s high school, Garfield, and going downtown, which would have been a nice walk, and it was a nice day. Instead, I made an apron. It’s a prototype for a demo that I’m doing for the Garden Expo, the 2nd weekend in February, about … [Read more…]

Last long weekend in Seattle

January 19, 2019 by ds83473@gmail.com

Thursday night I went to see Michael Nesmith at the Neptune Theater. The announcement said with Scott McCaughey and Ben Gibbard, and I didn’t know exactly how it was going to work. It turned out to be a short solo acoustic opening set by McCaughey, followed by Nesmith performing, seated with a 12-string guitar and a … [Read more…]

11 Days Left

January 16, 2019 by ds83473@gmail.com

All of a sudden, I have now been here in Seattle for longer than I have left to be here. I’ve been here 20 days and have 11 days left. Makes me feel even more slovenly since I am right now washing the bed sheets for the first time, although to my credit when it’s … [Read more…]

Sunday in the bagel line

January 13, 2019 by ds83473@gmail.com

It being Sunday, I walked to the co-op and bought a few things, then crossed the street to Westman’s Bagels, and took my spot in the long line that you have to wait in, even if you’re buying whole bagels to take home, and not a sandwich. The line looked pretty much like this when … [Read more…]
