Last two days of TIFF50

September 25, 2025 by ds83473@gmail.com

And back in Madison, nine days+ already. Saturday started with Glenrothan, about a Scottish family and their whiskey distilling business and the son who left and the one who stayed home. Verging on Hallmark Channel sappiness, but with great actors, Alan Cumming as the son who left and Brian Cox as the one who stayed, … [Read more…]

TIFF50, Friday: Four movies & Chinese food

September 17, 2025 by ds83473@gmail.com

Friday we saw four movies and all of them were quite good, plus we ate delicious upscale Chinese at another Chef Zach recommendation, Sunny’s Chinese. The first movie of the day was The Christophers, directed by Stephen Soderburgh, about an aging artist Julian Sklar (Ian McKellen) whose messy life seemed to me to be similar … [Read more…]

TIFF50, Wednesday & Thursday

September 13, 2025 by ds83473@gmail.com

On Wednesday we had a leisurely morning. Coffee at the Balzac’s at the public library and then breakfast at the AirBNB, then went to see Ballad of a Small Player with Colin Farrell as a gambler with Tilda Swinton as a dowdy collection agency employee chasing him. Which was quite enjoyable, but a bit confusing. … [Read more…]

TIFF50, Tuesday cont’d.

September 13, 2025 by ds83473@gmail.com

At Avenue Open Kitchen, We had big plates of eggs and bacon and toast; eggs and peameal bacon for me, and an omelette for Mark. I asked for an orange juice and it was almost a pint, 500ml, and definitely fresh squeezed, maybe not that moment but for sure that day. The potatoes were fresh … [Read more…]

TIFF50, cont’d.

September 10, 2025 by ds83473@gmail.com

Since we last talked, we’ve seen seven more movies and reached the halfway point of our stay. Actually I think wondering how sleeping on the same sheets for another five nights would be kept me up a bit last night. Or maybe it was that late afternoon iced coffee at Balzac’s. We’ve been walking a … [Read more…]

TIFF50

September 7, 2025 by ds83473@gmail.com

TIFF (Toronto International Film Fest) is celebrating its 50th this year, and we are here for the 7th time. We got in in the later afternoon Friday, taking the train from the airport which was super easy, then transferring to the subway with our suitcases, which was less easy, because of all the stairs. The … [Read more…]

Fifty-ith’s

July 21, 2025 by ds83473@gmail.com

Here’s a sign of how old I am. All these groups and organizations in Madison are celebrating 50th anniversaries this year. Or last year, like Willy Street Co-op. WORT, our community radio station where I was a volunteer and then a volunteer programmer and then a Board member from about 1984-1991, is 50 this year. … [Read more…]
