Oatmeal and potato chips

February 19, 2020 by ds83473@gmail.com

It’s not been a big week for cooking dinner – Tuesday I had a big lunch with a faculty candidate, and Wednesday I didn’t get enough steps, so both nights I wasn’t hungry for dinner. The title refers to the big bowl of oatmeal with dates, 1/2 a cup of dry oats instead of the … [Read more…]

Superbowl 2020

February 2, 2020 by ds83473@gmail.com

So let’s see – I’ve been too busy with work to write, and it’s been awhile. Looks like I told you a bit about Stephen & Belinda’s baby shower – which was super fun –  in my last post, so that was the weekend before super bowl weekend, and now it’s the Tuesday after. On … [Read more…]

It’s not Seattle

January 25, 2020 by ds83473@gmail.com

This is the kind of day it’s been.   Last year this day I was in Seattle, at the end of my one month sabbatical there, saying goodbye to my brother’s house and dog and neighborhood. Feeling a lot better about myself, and close to 5 pounds thinner than I am now. Sigh. All pics … [Read more…]

Winter Blahs

January 16, 2020 by ds83473@gmail.com

I was just sure I must’ve written something with this title before; looks like it was hashtag winterblahs in 2014, and winter blahs in 2013. Nothing on the newer blog for winter blahs, but I found Still January from 2018. Anyways, I’m feeling frozen and not in a good way – sluggish, like my metabolism … [Read more…]

Monday for real

January 7, 2020 by ds83473@gmail.com

I might’ve called last Thursday & Friday the official end to the holidays, and it felt kind of like a Monday coming to work on Thursday, but I could still say it was only sort of a work day. Plus there was a weekend after only 2 days. Today was much more of a real … [Read more…]

Six snow days

February 12, 2019 by ds83473@gmail.com

The Madison Schools have had six snow (or extreme cold weather) closure days this winter. Unheard of. That’s like 3 years worth of snow days – they only build about 1 or 2 extra days into the calendar each year for weather closures. Our global-climate-change winter has been crazy disruptive this year. And February’s not … [Read more…]

Back in Wisconsin in the Deep Freeze

January 31, 2019 by ds83473@gmail.com

At first, but now – when I started writing this, Saturday, Groundhogs Day – all of a sudden we’re thawing. I got back last Sunday around 4:00 in the afternoon. The kids had already had a snow day on the Wednesday prior, and more snow was on the way. The airlines sent me a bunch … [Read more…]

That time of year ….

March 11, 2018 by ds83473@gmail.com

… When it’s trying to be spring, and I’m just not ready. And, the last few years, I feel like, “Wait a minute we haven’t even really had winter yet, how can it be spring?” I first remember really feeling this way, not ready for spring but without the guilt about not having had winter … [Read more…]

Superbowl weekend: Goodbye old cat & Grillin’ for Peace & Vivian Maier

February 5, 2018 by ds83473@gmail.com

The black cat wasn’t eating too well, and I was starting to think maybe she had the same thyroid thing the white one had. But then Friday night it seemed like her back legs were stopping working, and I thought she smelled a little like pee, and I started worrying that maybe she was starting … [Read more…]

Still January

January 24, 2018 by ds83473@gmail.com

The New Yorker sent out an advance look of next week’s cover, and it pretty much sums up how I feel. Thanks to Roz Chast. I feel like I’ve been holed up at work, trying to get my classes up and running, not even going for walks. The weather has been unpleasant for the most … [Read more…]
