That day we had rain, slush, hail, ice pellets, rain again, then after dark it started to snow. The St. Patrick’s Day parade got cancelled and the Madison schools decided by around noon on Sunday to be closed Monday. Sunday afternoon it was so nasty outside, Mark didn’t even go for his second walk. Instead we holed up, watched the Oscars, and ate more of the cherry pie I made Saturday which was Pi Day. π

2026 Pi Day cherry pie. Still molten at this point

And by the time the snow stopped Monday the official count for Madison was about 8 inches, but it looked like more to me when we were shoveling. Jasper came here because daycare was closed, although Emma actually got him here before 8:00, not much later than our regular 7:40AM start time. She drove over in Al’s car because it has the newest tires. We were still shoveling then, and Jasper didn’t want to stay outside, so Mark did most of the first round. I made up by shoveling the driveway apron where the really wet stuff was, when we went out again around 2:00, when the sun was out and Jasper had on his full winter gear including snow pants.

Snow Day inside play

Looking at that nice cherry pie shot, I think I figured out why my blog has seemed so disappointing to me recently – not enough food. I’ve been trying to write about war and politics and all the stuff that’s horrifying me, and I think I’ve lost the food journalling aspect of this blog, that is what I like the best. But there’s no photo evidence of the work between the sprinkle cookies and Jasper on Wednesday.

Jasper with kitchen tools

I did not take pictures of what I made for dinner all those nights, either. Monday I made coronation chicken salad, using up the last of the chicken white meat from the potpie on March 1, and scalloped potatoes with ham, using up some ham from a ham steak from our last pig from Curious Farmer, that we did not completely consume at a prior brunch. The chicken salad was good – I ate mine open face on wholewheat sourdough toast, Mark made a sandwich on white. Tuesday I went and joined a get out the vote postcard writing group out at Garver, and brought home Ian’s pizza and a salad. I know I made banana cupcakes with cream cheese frosting with Jasper on Wednesday, and we had vegetable soup and grilled cheese for dinner. Thursday I roasted sweet potatoes and made brown rice pilaf with the leftover corn and spinach that didn’t go in the vegetable soup. I had sweet potato for my main, pilaf on the side; Mark made a sandwich and had sweet potato as a side.

Friday the 13th it was another trip to Chicago on a really windy day. We thought we’d get lunch at the Goddess & the Baker on Wabash, but it was packed, so we went and got a kind of soggy sandwich at one of the places in the food court on Washington, all too well. (yes, they know they are quoting Taylor Swift.) We came home and finished the vegetable soup with toast for a late dinner.

View from the food court – the Reliance Building reflected in Block 37

And that brings us just about back to where we started, the wild weather weekend, Ides of March. We went to the Farmers Market and then for a walk, and then had Sunday brunch for Saturday lunch, scrambled eggs with Brie, the scalloped potatoes pan fried, toast, and wedges of apple, orange, and grapefruit. The Pi day pie for dinner, with ice cream. Sunday Susan and I went to the gym, and Mark and I had Barret’s Bagels for breakfast.
